The story continues...

Our year began with the construction of our trail. This has been in our plan since the beginning, and now with the help of our principal, Mr. Bruce Barnard, it was finally becoming a reality. On August 30, Bartels Construction arrived to begin digging the trail. It didn't take long for the trail to appear, and the City of Mattoon donated the mulch for the footing.

All through September, students picked up trash, helped spread the trail mulch, weeded tree beds, and were each assigned two trees for which they were responsible.

We planted one of the lower flower beds that had been flooded the spring before with wildflower seeds. The result was a beautiful display of flowers that held their color through late summer and most of the fall.

By late September, Physical Education classes were using the trail to walk, and their teachers had received grant money to purchase pedometers to help them reach personal walking goals.

We began to notice more and more "critters" in our little arbor, and they were always welcome.
