Tree Description

Straight-trunked, with broad, spreading crown growing between 70 and 90 feet tall.

Habitat

It grows in all soils except those of limestone formation.

Range

Northeastern U.S., absent from south Coastal Plains.

Leaf Description

Deciduous; alternate; oblong-lanceolate, prominently veined; 5 to 8 inches long; shiny dark green on top, paler beneath; smooth on both surfaces.

Dark brownish gray; smooth on young trees; broken into broad, flattened, scaly ridges and furrows on large trunks.

Spiny husks, each containing 1 to 5 dark brown chestnuts, slightly flattened
