Tree Description

Small to medium-size tree with short trunk, reaches height of 30 to 40 feet with a diameter of 2 feet, sometimes larger;  broad, full crown;  long terminal twigs drooping in graceful curves.

Habitat

Open areas, parks, and gardens;  often along streams or wherever soil is moist.

Range

From Quebec to British Columbia and down to the Gulf of Mexico.

Leaf Description

Simple, deciduous;  alternate;  thin;  smooth, glossy, dark green on top, gray or white beneath;  2.5 to 5 inches long, narrowly lance-shaped with pointed tips;  edges with fine teeth.

Bark Description

Dark brown to black;  furrowed.

Fruit Description

Light brown capsule, 0.06 inch long;  maturing in late spring or early summer; 2-valved capsule containing minute hairy seeds.
