Description:
large tree with rounded crown of dense foliage;  height is 70 to 100 feet with a diameter of 2 to 3 feet.

 
Habitat:

uplands and valleys with moist soils;  sometimes in pure stands.
     Range:  from Newfoundland to Ontario and Minnesota, southward through the northern United States to northern Georgia and northern Louisiana.  The tree is most abundant in the northern part of its range.
